My sight and I - The Traveleyes

Not a planned adventure or a new year resolution but I am definitely going to share my sight with someone this year.

I have been thinking lately after I spoke to a friend about my intention to go on a solitary holiday and she thought it was a brilliant plan considering my reasons.

Have you tried or imagined traveling to a strange country all by yourself where you have no-one and you have no reason to travel there since there are better places to go on a holiday?

My dear friend suggested something really amazing and asked: "how about being the eyes for someone you have never met just for a week or two?". I could not figure out what that meant at first but she tried to explain this conundrum but not as simple as I had expected.

She went  on  teasing and calling me names like we do to each other whenever we have reason to feel smarter. I think we all have that one or two friends that always want to show you that they  are smarter or simply want to let you know that you are really not as smart. She went on and on teasing me for days and finally told me.

Here is how she said it 'olodo(see meaning below) have you not heard about traveleyes before?'. To be honest, that was the first time I had heard about that. Well, I am literally reading about it as I write. Therefore, if you have not  heard about it prior to reading this piece, we are in exactly same 'shoes' and I do hope this post will help you decide on taking that special holiday.

She further explained by saying: "when I say be the eyes for someone I mean literally to lead a blind person you have never met before and taking them on a tour round a city or a country you have never been before". She went on explaining what my job responsibilities would be like should I decide to give it a shot. The job description as explained includes taking them on a tour and explaining tourist sights to enable them create mental pictures of the environment and any sights you both visit. Guess what? no experience is required.

I found that when one sense organ is lost, the brain redirects itself to boost the remaining senses. The talented Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles evidenced that loss of sight enhance other senses and confers superior musical ability these can also be seen in one of the Nigerian finest artist Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo and in the superhero Daredevil who uses his heightened remaining senses to combat crime.

The remaining senses not only  become more acute  or heightened but the part of the brain devoted to that area continue being active by diverting and refocusing the energy to assist functioning senses. I believe that explains it better to those of us that are not science inclined.

In fact, the study published in The Journal of Neuroscience postulates that the area devoted to processing instant vision rewires to sound and touch senses. They are very clever and that explains it all - in a nutshell.

The idea that senses responsible for visual cortex in blind individuals is taken over by other senses cannot be over-emphasised.
I find Amar Latif interview with Wanderlust travel magazine highly inspiring. Amar, the founder of traveleyes lost his sight due to an incurable eye condition but in this interview he said: " losing my sight pushed me into pushing forward."

I think disability rests heavily on the mindset. When the mindset is correct disability becomes ability in disguise. Amar is not only the founder of traveleyes today but a TV actor, director, entrepreneur, public speaker and above all he is also an adventurer and a world traveller.

If you are inspired in anyway kindly comment below and share to inspire someone today.

The Majority effect

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where everyone is saying the same thing at  same time and you are clueless? If yes, what did you do? Did you just say -well, majority cannot be wrong let me dance along?
Interestingly, majority now connotes correctness. Years ago something happened and this quote just reminded me of that ecstatic event.
It was a Palm Sunday which means a Sunday before Easter. There was a massive procession  with Palm fronds in the hands of everyone and a journalist as usual showed up and started a Vox popish kind of interview about the event and the history behind it.
People of all ages were interviewed and then it was time for this young man in his late 30s to be interviewed.
The journalist asked: "tell us your  feeling about the event and what is the rationale behind the parade" and  he replied : "Well, It is a very good parade, I feel happy and I am enjoying it. To be honest, I don't really know why they are holding palm fronds or the reason for the procession. I just joined and someone gave me this palm frond".
This is not very different from what we see everyday. We do things simply because everyone is doing it without taking a moment to reflect and ask ourselves whether it is right or wrong.
My generation is indeed a challenging one. Everyone seems to be on same page and if that be the case then, It will not be inaccurate to say that no one is thinking at all.
Everybody is headed on the same direction -where the hell is our destination I ponder.
The saying that majority carries the vote is not absolute. There is still need for us to pulse for a moment and reflect.Majority now connotes correctness but where it may lead could be a destination of no return. The views of the majority should be well thought.

The most wonderful time

What does Christmas mean to you? Is Christ the reason or you are the reason for the season?

I pondered on this question simply because of how we go about this wonderful season. The season comes in different shades to different people reflecting their diverse cultural background. I went to the shopping mall and it was unbelievably crowded and I wondered if  Christmas is all about shopping.

To some people it is simply the best time to shop because of the offers and discounts. To others, it is the time to get closer to God, reflect, plan and make a list of 'dos and don'ts' popularly known as 'the new year resolution' which I doubt with due respect would survive the first week of the new year.

In any event, it is the most wonderful time of the year to make peace, reunite with friends and family. If you don't have anyone, don't worry it is also a time to make friends and if you are lucky enough it could lead  to a  happy ending of the  year and a wonderful beginning of a new year. Therefore, It is that time of the year to get hooked up while partying  real hard.

With these thoughts playing tricks on my mind I found that we are actually the reason for the season. It is about you and I really.

Christ was conceived for a purpose and that purpose is you and I. You are indeed special and you have every reason to celebrate but do remember to smile more often and share in every little way you can especially with those who have no one to share with or receive gifts from. A warm touch will go a long way to brighten someone's face and day. Give it!

Christmas is indeed all about giving just like christ has been given to us for our salvation and redemption.

Merry Xmas and Happy new year special one. Enjoy the most wonderful time of the year...

Be confident

I was in the shower today pondering on the amazing things I have achieved over the years and I found that most of the things I have done successfully were the things I was told were impossible.

I have been told 'you cannot do it' in the past several times. If you are discouraged for any reason, I write to let you know that I have been in that shoes before and  I sailed through it all. If I can then you can and even better.

Be confident in anything you do, wear a thicker skin if you are already wearing a thick skin and soar above every limitations and adversities trusting your instinct and believing in yourself because no one is going to do it for you.

Even our dear Lord requires your faith to perform miracle for you.

Be aware that there  are lots of  people out there that will call you names and tell you that you are a complete show off even when the blind can clearly see that you are helplessly clever.

Like the devil they shall remind you of all your sins, past mistakes, your background  etc etc and conclude on your destiny.

They will give you one thousand and one reasons if not millions why you cannot do it but all  you need is just one reason why you can.

That one reason to say you can, I shall leave to you to find because I have found mine so has every successful person. Find yours and be unstoppable today!

Finally, to everyone there aiming or seeking for something great, be confident and go for it because you can!
